Our Leadership
Robert G. Graw, Jr., MD
CEO and Chief Pediatrician

Righttime Medical Care is the culmination of a dream of Dr. Robert G. Graw, Jr., who decided at the age of six that he wanted to become a pediatrician. Profoundly influenced by his medical training in a busy urban setting, early clinical work with terminally ill patients at the National Cancer Institute, and later by thousands of patients in his private practice, Dr. Graw committed himself to developing medical delivery systems focused intensely on the best interests of the patient. Today, Righttime Medical Care, which began in 1989 as Nighttime Pediatrics to give care when childrens’ pediatricians were unavailable, serves hundreds of thousands of patients each year. While Righttime has adapted to changing times, Dr. Graw’s philosophy has remained constant: serve patients when they need you, in a way that honors their emotional and physical needs, regardless of the duration of the encounter or severity of the illness.
I learned that access to care when patients actually need it means so much.
In pursuit of his lifelong desire to be a physician, Dr. Graw trained in the stimulating clinical environment of the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, at a time when clinical professors mentored students daily on the front lines of medicine. As a young physician, Dr. Graw remembers being left in charge of the large city emergency room overnight. He describes his interactions with patients and other physicians during that period as being invaluable in shaping his understanding of both the science of medicine, and the ethics of clinical responsibility. Armed with insatiable curiosity and enthusiasm, and without a proliferation of specialists on which to rely for advice, Dr. Graw relished the bustling environment where he could engage fully with many patients and their illnesses. “I learned that access to care when patients actually need it means so much, and that illnesses don’t know bankers’ hours. I also realized I didn’t need to know every answer, so long as I reassured patients I wouldn’t abandon them in their search for answers,” Dr. Graw recalls. To this day, Dr. Graw advises physicians at Righttime, “Instead of saying ‘It’s late at night and you should be so lucky I’m here to see you’, tell patients, ‘What a privilege it is to be here to serve you. How can I help you tonight?’”
